The car-free destinations of Bettmeralp, Riederalp and Fiescheralp within the Aletsch Arena and perched high on the sunny Valais plateau and can only be reached by cablecar. These are idyllic and extremely popular villages for family holidays.

The mountain landscape and the breathtaking views attract numerous hikers, bikers and trail-runners during summer.

We stayed in Bettmeralp during our visit to Aletsch Arena, but we easily biked from there to Fiescheralp and Riederalp; the two neighboring towns.

With over 100 kilometres of action-packed routes, Aletsch Arena is a mountain-bike paradise, and yes!, we did a lot of biking.

Whether you’re using sheer muscle power or electrical assistance, like us, you can enjoy a limitless biking experience.

My boys loved the new Wurzenbord flow trail on Bettmeralp. It is a 3km trail with lots of turns, rollers and jumps ideal for beginners as well as mountain bike pros.

And what better reward than a refreshing dip into the Bettmer lake at 2,000 masl.

The adrenaline buzz of crossing a new suspension bridge was calling me, so we went for a rather steep hike without really studying the trail map. From Riederfurka to the suspension bridge (Belalp-Riederalp) it would have taken approximately 2H (one way).

The hike turned to be much longer and demanding than expected as it was very hot.

Yes, we missed the bridge which is known by the imposing view of the glacier gate 😢, but we still had a great hike inside the natural reserve of Aletsch forest.

At Riederfurka, you can visit the Villa Cassel, the former summer residence of English banker Ernest Cassel, now the centre of Pro Natura Aletsch.

A family atmosphere, breathtaking nature, countless options for activities and much more besides: the Aletsch Arena in Valais is a very special place for holidays in Switzerland.

See specific post on the view points of The Great ALETSCH Glacier, an impressive natural landscape and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
