There are four viewpoints from which we can admire the scale of this giant beauty: the Moosfluh, Hohfluh, Bettmerhorn and Eggishorn.
During our 2 day visit to Aletsch Arena we visited the Eggishorn and the Moosfluh viewpoints.
On Eggishorn, the highest of the four view points (2869m asl) you get the whole package at one go: from here you can see not only the entire 20 kilometres of the Great Aletsch Glacier, but also Konkordiaplatz and the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.
The Moosfluh view point at 2333m above sea level is also quite impressive and the vegetation quite different.
Some interesting key facts:
✅ 20 km length – This makes the Great Aletsch Glacier the longest ice stream in the Alps.
✅ It weighs 10 billion tonnes.
✅ The thickest ice on the glacier at Konkordiaplatz is 800 meters.
To give you an idea of how massive thIs ice giant is, if it were to melt, each citizen of the earth could be supplied with one litre of water a day for 3.5 years 🤯
Sadly, global warming is also affecting the Aletsch Glacier to a concerning extent. Measurements by the Pro Natura Center show that it is experiencing dramatic ablation, shrinking by up to 50 metres in length each year and retreating significantly at the edges.
There are amazing hikes to do in Aletsch arena; some people reached the view points by foot (which is why I classified this under free activities), but we took the telecabine / telesiege which is payable.
